Maritime Training / Diving Medical Technician (DMT)

Prerequisites for entering the course

Completion of the Basic Medical Course and knowledge or certification in diving is highly recommended. Graduating students should be assigned to DMT duties upon completion to ensure competency of core skills. Foreign students must have a working knowledge of English.

Certifications upon Completion

Students will be proficient in all aspects of Diving Medicine and will be able to serve as a member of a hyperbaric treatment team or on-site diving medical technician. Students will receive accreditation and certification from the American Health & Safety Institute (ASHI) for First Aid and CPR (if not already qualified); Oxygen Providers certification from the Diving Alert Network (DAN), USA and membership in the DAN organization; Students upon completion of required clinical hours may be eligible for certification as a Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT), UK as well as a certification by the National Board of Diving Hyperbaric Medical Technicians (NBDHT), USA. A certificate of DMT completion and competency will also be issued by Atlantis Diving Technologies (USA), and Tactical Solutions International, Inc. USA. Certification is valid for 2 years.

Course Overview

This is a 120 hour course and will consist of lecture, practical exercises and formal evaluation. All student handouts, workbooks and textbooks will be provided. Major topic areas include:

  • Diving Anatomy & Physiology
  • Roles & responsibilities of the DMT
  • Principles and Priorities of First Aid
  • Introduction to Hyperbaric Chambers
  • Examinations of injured divers
  • Use of Catheters
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Casualty management (onsite and in transit to chamber)
  • Diving Physics
  • Diving Illnesses
